Build Yourself

REVELATIONS FOR TODAY by Pastor Michael Obata

Jude 1:20 – New King James Version (NKJV)

20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up on your most holy faith, praying in the Holy Spirit,

Speaking in the Spirit is considered by many believers to be a gift from God—a divine ability granted to His children. Speaking in tongues serves as a distinct method of communication with God, based on the belief that human language may not fully convey profound desires, revelations, or spiritual insights. There are individuals who critique or question the importance of speaking in tongues; this perspective exists among some Christians as well, often attributed to limited understanding on the subject.

Praying in tongues is regarded as evidence of the presence and empowerment of the Holy Spirit in a Christian’s life. Scriptural references such as Mark 16:17 highlight its significance: “And these signs will follow those who believe … they will speak with new tongues.” Similarly, 1 Corinthians 14 (AMP) notes, “One who speaks in a tongue edifies himself.” Praying in tongues provides motivation, refreshment, and guidance consistent with GOD’s purposes. It provides the ability to engage effectively in evangelism, intercession, and the reception of insight or wisdom (RHEMA) through the HOLY SPIRIT, as referenced in Ephesians 6:18.

Moreover, praying in tongues is believed to strengthen one’s relationship with the HOLY SPIRIT, thereby enhancing spiritual understanding and wisdom. Many Christians model their prayers after church leaders yet may not experience similar results; it is suggested that prayer effectiveness correlates with one’s depth of biblical knowledge and spiritual revelation. Integrating scriptural study with prayer in the Spirit is viewed as essential for impactful prayer and spiritual growth. The gift of speaking in diverse tongues is seen to amplify GODs power and influence in a believer’s life. For example, 1 Corinthians 13:1 states, “Though I speak with the tongues of men and of angels”, which, while primarily focused on love, gives us insight into the principle of praying in the spirit(tongues) can lead to praying in the tongue of angels. Afterall, Angels are there to minister to the heirs of salvation: you & I.

Christians are encouraged to desire the gift of speaking in tongues as a means of fostering their spiritual development. The anticipated outcome is a more fruitful and victorious Christian life, marked by deeper understanding, strengthened faith, and ongoing successes.
